Q - Since patients aren't allowed to eat before surgery, when can they eat afterwards? A - Once patients have awoken after surgery and are stabilized, they're generally encouraged to drink small amounts of clear liquid and even eat something small like crackers. Though it's best to start slowly with soft foods or liquids, it usually okay for patients to begin eating as soon as they feel hungry.
