A rhinoplasty is a a form of facial plastic surgery that aims at resolving cosmetic and functional issues with a person’s nose. Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job” was one of the top 5 cosmetic surgeries performed in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Some patients are unhappy with the nose they were born with, or with the way aging has changed their nose. For others, functional issues and distorted nasal anatomy impacts breathing. Slight alteration of the nose can greatly improve its appearance and function. As with all facial plastic surgery, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites.
The Art of Nose Surgery
Rhinoplasty, in addition to all facial plastic surgeries, requires artistry along with medical knowledge to refine the nose so that it is in harmony with other facial features. Dr. Nassif and Dr. Yoo both approach nose surgery with the intention of resolving nasal issues while maintaining the unique beauty of the patient. Rhinoplasty procedures often require fine refinements to the nasal anatomy and consideration of the overall facial appearance.
Additionally, many patients have a chin augmentation or other facial surgical procedures in conjunction with rhinoplasty to create a better balance of features. A consultation with a facial plastic surgeon is key to identifying the best surgical strategy to achieve the desired results.
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, it may be performed with local injections of anesthesia with intravenous sedation. All forms of nose surgery should only be performed by a trained and highly skilled facial surgeon. Watch a complete rhinoplasty experience with an actual Los Angeles patient of Dr. Nassif.
Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
With a closed rhinoplasty the majority of the incisions are made inside the nose, where they are invisible. An open rhinoplasty, in contrast, requires external incisions to gain access to the interior of the nose. The facial cosmetic surgeon will determine whether an open or closed rhinoplasty is appropriate after assessing the patients nasal anatomy and considering his or her goals.
Certain amounts of bone and cartilage are then removed or rearranged to provide a newly shaped nose. If the patient has a deviated septum (cartilage and/or bone causing obstruction inside the nose), septal surgery, called septoplasty, is simultaneously performed. Any incisions are placed entirely inside the nose. The septoplasty removes portions of cartilage and/or bone that are causing the obstruction. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures, followed by the placement of a splint to the outside of the nose. The splint helps to retain the new shape while the nose heals.
