Would a reduction in the size of my nose change how I breathe?

Filed under: Rhinoplasty — Dr. Paul Nassif @ 9:42 am

Question:
My nose is much too large for my face.  I would like to get it reduced in size with a nose job.  I am a nose breather.  If I get my nose reduced significantly will that effect my breathing?

Answer:
When performed properly by a highly skilled surgeon, a rhinoplasty that is performed in order to reduce the size of your nose should not have an adverse side effect on your breathing.  However, if the nose is made too small and the surgery is too aggressive, breathing may be affected.  It is important to understand that in order to have a nose that is functionally perfect you may not be able to go as small as you may want.  In addition, surgery where the nose is made too small may not look natural. With a situation like this, good communication with your surgeon is essential.  Thank you very much for the question.  If you wish, you may send any photographs that you may have to Lisa, my Patient Care Coordinator, at ana@spaldingplasticsurgery.com and I would be happy to evaluate them for you.
