The Value Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy In Cosmetic Surgery
Dr Ralph Potkin is the Medical Director of the Beverly Hills Center for Hyperbaric Medicine. Board certified in pulmonary medicine and hyperbaric medicine, Dr. Potkin has over 20 years experience in this field. With the knowledge he has accumulated, Dr. Potkin has developed a protocol for using Hyperbaric Oxygen to enhance healing in cosmetic surgery patients. His protocol is currently used world wide.
What is new in the 21st century in cosmetic surgery healing?
Along with new surgical techniques, the use of hyperbaric oxygen is being
used to reduce pain and swelling and speed up the healing process.
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen is a medical treatment which uses 100% oxygen given
to the whole body in a pressure chamber. Oxygen which is the most important
element necessary for the health of all cells in the body, is raised hundreds of times
more than normal. This high level of oxygen has dramatic effects on the cells and speeds up the body’s natural healing process.
How does hyperbaric oxygen accomplish this healing process?
Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the
body only by the red blood cells, which already carry 98% of their
capacity for oxygen. With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, oxygen is
dissolved into all the body’s fluids and tissues, and can even be
carried to areas where the circulation is compromised or even blocked.
This allows extra oxygen to reach all of the damaged tissues so that the body
can carry on its own healing process. This increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability
of the white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduce local swelling, and promote
collagen formation.
After a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, a variety of chemicals are released to the cells which improve the healing process. After surgery the body sends white blood cells from
the circulation to the area of surgery. These white blood cells cause
tissue injury and may actually slow down the healing process. Dr. William Zamboni of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in the Department of Reconstructive
Surgery and other scientists have shown that hyperbaric oxygen stops the white blood
cells from causing inflammation and swelling and this improves the recovery
of the tissues. Growth factors are chemicals which enhance healing and these chemicals are increased with hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Small molecules called nitric oxide regulate this response in the body and nitric oxide production is modified in a beneficial way after hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Stem cells
are also affected by nitric oxide and Dr. Stephen Thom at the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia has shown that hyperbaric oxygen mobilizes
these important cells.
Hyperbaric oxygen reduces swelling or what doctors call edema.
Swelling which is a normal body response to surgery slows down the
healing process and this is reduced after hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Another beneficial effect of hyperbaric oxygen is due to its effect on
the small blood vessels called capillaries. Hyperbaric oxygen improves
the circulation of blood into the area of surgery and can actually grow
new capillaries due to a process called angiogenesis or neovascularization. This
microcirculation effect is essential to the healing process.
In addition, due to the favorable effect on white blood cells mentioned above and
the diminished edema effect, post operative pain can be minimized and the use
of pain medications can be reduced.
What will you experience during the hyperbaric treatment?
Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are painless and pleasant even after
recent surgery. Each treatment lasts for about one hour. You will
be impressed by how comfortable and relaxing the treatment is.
An additional benefit of this treatment is the reduction of stress
and anxiety of the recent surgery. Many patients sleep during the
procedure and find the treatment to be similar to meditation.
In fact, hyperbaric oxygen treatments are given to many
patients with a variety of illnesses and to healthy people
to minimize stress.
How many treatments will you require?
Dr. Potkin’s protocol consists of one treatment given the
day prior to surgery and for 3 to 5 treatments administered daily
starting the day after your cosmetic surgery procedure.
The cost per treatment is $250, Please pay to the office of Dr. Paul S. Nassif
